Steel was investigated similarly. The structure of steel was reviewed briefly, without going into deep details of metallurgy. The properties of steel are greatly influenced by alloying elements and the effects of those were discussed. The strength characteristics of steel were discussed and finally the tendency of steel to rust, especially in a climate like ours was discussed.
Once the three materials were understood sufficiently, they were compared as framing materials. The five performance criteria used as a basis of comparison were safety, durability, cost, speed and sustainability, in order of importance. To show the effect of importance, each criterion was given a weight, which was then multiplied by the performance of each material. The material with the maximum total of weighted performance values was the best material. Steel proved to be the best by an undisputed margin.
