The UK grocery market has been going through tremendous transformation process as not only new players are emerging in the scene but also new processes are taking place. The conventional store environment is increasingly losing grounds and is replaced by the online buying and selling of the entire household needs and wants (DataMonitor, 2010). Due to this reason, different players in the market are emerging. Ocado is one such player that has been catering to the needs of the people living in the country and is trying really hard to establish its hold in the market. The organization unlike other competitors in the market has unique business models that distinguish it from the rest of the market player (SBA, 2012). However, as mentioned previously the competition in the industry is very intense and margins are consistently decreasing with the passage of time that in turn has made it increasingly difficult for the market player to accomplish their profitability goals. Ocado has no exception as the organization has been suffering from consistent losses. The dominant reason behind the firm's sufferings could be attributed to the inability of the organization to gain a competitive advantage as its unique business model has seized to provide any edge to the organization over its competitors (Ahargrave, 2011).
Realizing the significance of competitive advantage in accomplishing an organization's goals, efforts will be directed in this paper to investigate critically that why Ocado has failed to realize a competitive advantage is meager and could not result in a dominant competitive advantage for the organization. The discussions on the paper will be based on two strategic models including Porter's value chain analysis and the Competitive Option Model. The discussion in the paper will be directed that how Ocado could respond to the expected changes in the business environment in which it is operating and what are the future options with the organization.
